Story
'Orleans Dreams' is a far from obvious parody of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ set in the early nineties and based on the journey of four unique characters brought together as a result of their search for meaning and their need for companionship. There is Martin, a paraplegic who has lost his desire, Oscar who is mentally handicapped, Lionel the wannabe gangster rapper, and Ruthy who ran away and wants to make her way back home to New Orleans. Ruthy is passing through town when she encounters Martin having a hard time getting through a door at the local grocery store, she helps him through and they part ways. Martin and Oscar are neighbours. Oscar drops by Martin’s house daily and returns despite Martin’s foul behavior. Oscar is almost perpetually happy and Martin is constantly on the edge and always drunk or drinking. Martin’s house is falling apart and for sale and his lot is the most unkempt on the street. One day Oscar drops by to find Martin drunk again and throwing his beer cans at the TV. Oscar sees a television evangelist from the south healing the handicapped. He instantly takes this to be truth and begins jubilantly persuading Martin to make the trip down to see this miracle healer. Martin’s house has just been sold and he agrees to the trip. He is willing to part with this existence. Along their way they pick up Ruthy and later Lionel who are hitchhiking. They encounter many other characters, some helping them while others not so much. On their journey they find common ground and each discovers what they need through their interaction with one another. Disaster is averted several times and the greatest of all tragedies is overcome due to a miracle they experience exactly where it’s meant to be…
This film will take you through many emotions while finding the comedy in all of them.
Style
This will be a colorful film reminiscent of ‘Amelie’ but in a North American context and with more emphasis on the characters. It will examine the loneliness of being different while exposing the invaluable worth of the traits that make us unique. In every aspect of the production process we will strive to make this film intriguing and inimitable.
